Gay Appleby Rogers, Owner
a little about me….gay appleby rogers…
Textiles and Fashion have been my passion since it dawned on me, early on, that I had a fashionable Mother who cared a lot about her wardrobe. I learned, through her, a love and respect for fashion and how important it was to develop a personal style. She had the vision to send me to sewing lessons when I was 12, thus giving me what I needed to marry the esthetic with the craft. I have never looked back. Sewing has been a life long preoccupation. I was very fortunate to study Art History and French at university, and I traveled in France, Britain and Italy. I eventually settled in Britain and raised three lovely children, sewing all the way through! I learned “make do and mend” resourcefulness, whilst indulging my passion for vintage textiles and fashion. Living near London allowed me the privilege of trawling the V & A Museum, Liberty, and Carnaby St. for inspiration. Frequent trips to France meant brocantes (flea markets), perfect for finding textile treasures, not to mention discovering Lyon the historic silk making centre of France, Nimes and Tarascon, home to beautiful Souleiado fabrics.
Training as a Design teacher in Britain in ’96 was a wonderful challenge and I landed my dream job: teaching Art History and Textiles/Fashion at Bedford High School. I feel very fortunate to have taught subjects for which I had a life long passion and to engage with so many creative and wonderful students. Being involved with teaching and studying fashion, fibres, garment construction, and art textiles has been a joy. This experience has given me an eclectic and unique vision which I consider a privilege. I look forward to working with my customers and colleagues at The Silk Road to help them create the perfect garment, accessory or textile product by helping them choose the appropriate style, fabric, lining, interfacing, thread, trim and buttons.
